Asian Music

Asia offers what many contend are the most interesting and unique sounds on the planet. With countless cultures that stretch back for hundreds and thousands of years, Asian musical traditions have evolved an entire universe of sounds, styles and instruments, often without much influence from the West.

At times Asian music is simple, soothing, and lovely, whether you're listening to the sweet tones of the Chinese dizi, the mellifluous morin khuur of Mongolia, or the bright, carnivalesque khene from Laos.

Other times, the music of Asia is loud and/or cacophanous, as in the booming taiko drums of Japan, the dissonant, cackling vocalizing of the Korean pansori opera, or the hypnotic ringing of the gamelan orchestras of Indonesia.

Modern music in Asia often builds upon these folk music traditions, while incorporating a more international, updated sound. Artists in every country are exploring new sounds, and breaking new ground by keeping an open mind and combining heretofore separate styles of music into exciting new genres.
